With a variety of options to choose from, dentures are an effective means of replacing natural teeth that have been lost due to damage, disease, an accident, or just simply never grew in, offering complete function and appearance of a natural bite. Replacing one or more teeth either through a removable or permanent denture ensures that the remaining teeth stay where they are supposed to be and allows patients to continue eating and living normally.
Dentures include any artificial tooth or set of teeth that are used to replace teeth that have either been lost, pulled, or never grew in for functional and aesthetic purposes. Teeth can need to be replaced by an artificial stand-in for many reasons, with gum disease being the leading cause of damaging teeth and surrounding tissue to the point where all of the affected teeth would need to be removed. While dentures are much more prevalent in the elderly population, anyone can have them if teeth have been lost through an accident, or due to decay or disease. Dentures can be used to replace any number of teeth at once, but are commonly recommended for those who have lost at least 2 to 3 teeth to prevent the surrounding teeth from being overused or incurring damage through compensating for the missing teeth.
The four commonly used types of dentures include traditional complete dentures, partial dentures, denture implants, and implant supported partial dentures.
Traditional complete dentures: This kind of denture is used when all of the natural teeth need to be replaced. The complete dentures will differ from upper teeth to the bottom teeth only in that the upper teeth will also often have a place that overs the roof of the mouth and are typically made out of acrylic and rest directly on the gums.
Partial dentures: Partial dentures are used in patients who have not lost all of their teeth as they can be fitted with one or several artificial teeth to seamlessly fill out the rest of the smile and can help to prevent the other teeth from moving around.
Denture implants: For those who wish for a more permanent replacement for their teeth, dental implants are able to look and function as natural teeth as they are placed into the jawbone with titanium posts and cement.
Implant supported partial dentures: These appear similar to partial dentures but are a more permanent option as they are a grouping of several teeth being attached to the jaw bone permanently with titanium rods to provide a full set of functional teeth.
The type of denture you require depends on how many teeth need to be replaced and if the patient would benefit more from a permanent or removable option.
As long as at least one tooth is missing, dentures are a possibility for restoring function and aesthetics, but most dentists won’t recommend partial dentures until at least 2 to 3 teeth are missing. Denture implants are a good option for those who have only lost one or two teeth as they will help to make sure that the rest of the surrounding teeth do not move to fill in the gap that has been left behind and can restore the proper bite. There is no defined number of teeth that must be gone before partial dentures can be used, whether you are a good candidate for dentures or not will be decided on an individual basis between you and your dentist.
Typically, partial dentures will have a longer lifetime of 10 to 15 years than complete dentures, which often require replacement after 5 to 10 years. The total lifespan of dentures can depend on how well they are taken care of on a day to day basis, and may need to be replaced sooner if the mouth undergoes significant enough changes to no longer fit the dentures properly. Dental implants have a much longer lifetime, often lasting for at least 25 years or more so it is rare that they will need to be replaced at some point throughout the patients’ life unless it becomes damaged, infected, or loosens.
